Involving children
We have long experience of broadening young people’s education through our concert programmes. Our performance of Will Todd’s The Burning Road (commissioned in 1996 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Jarrow March) at The Sage Gateshead in July 2007 included choirs from three Northumberland middle schools and was preceded by foyer displays of the children's art and textiles work and drama performances all linked to the March.

We also produce education sheets on some of the works we perform. These are available to our audience at public rehearsals, and the latest sheets (produced to support our Good Vibrations! concert at the Barbican in April 2008) are available as downloads - click here.

Involving adults
Where a concert venue allows, we open our pre-concert rehearsal to the general public and invite clubs and groups whom we think would be interested in the programme. Representatives of the Chorus are on hand to supply background information on the music being performed and answer any questions. Admission is free.

Charities
The Chorus is a keen supporter of charities, particularly those concerned with children. Each year our Christmas carol concert supports a charity: recent concerts have raised well over one thousand pounds for Grove House and many hundreds of pounds for The Pepper Foundation, Teenage Cancer Trust, Hertfordshire Autistic Resource Centre and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Also, members of our ‘Race for Life’ team (pictured here) have raised thousands of pounds for cancer research.
