Christmas Concert

Haileybury College Chapel,
Hertford SG13 7NU

Haileybury Chapel at night

  • Hertfordshire Chorus
  • Charles Andrews accompanist
  • David Temple conductor

The festive season comes round again and we will be celebrating with our annual concert of traditional Christmas music. It is our privilege to sing glorious works in wonderful venues throughout the year, but we all have a special love of Christmas in Haileybury College Chapel because it is always a magical occasion. As ever it is a family event with audience carols, and the Chorus will sing a range of Christmas music old and new. David Temple will conduct, and the Chorus will be accompanied by Charles Andrews.

[Keech Hospice Care]We always support a local charity at our Christmas concerts, and this year we are pleased to be supporting Keech Hospice Care. Keech Hospice supports both adults and children patients, making a difference to children across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes who have a terminal illness and life-limiting condition; and also to their parents and siblings who need their support.  You can read more about Keech Hospice Care here: www.keech.org.uk/

Mendelssohn composed his Symphony No. 2 Hymn of Praise in B flat major, for the celebrations in Leipzig of the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press. After its first performance this symphony, Mendelssohn’s most ambitious symphonic achievement, became one of his most popular compositions even though today it is much less well-known.

Beethoven composed his Mass in C in 1807, a period of prodigious output when he was in his mid-30s. Nearly all his music was being received ecstatically and his fame and reputation blossomed across Europe. Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy commissioned Beethoven to write a mass for his wife’s name’s-day and the mass that Beethoven produced was novel and striking. Beethoven was pleased with his work and there was no stopping the flow of masterpieces from his pen. His next work would be to complete his 5th Symphony.

Beethoven’s Mass in C is appreciated today by critics but is not often performed. Michael Moore wrote of it “While it is often overshadowed by the immense Missa Solemnis, written some fifteen years later, it has a directness and an emotional content that the latter work sometimes lacks“.
