James McCarthy Codebreaker and Will Todd Ode to a Nightingale
Entering the Specialist Classical charts at number 7, this CD builds on our reputation for commissioning and performing some of the very best in contemporary choral music. In our first recording with Signum we are joined by the BBC Concert Orchestra for a 2CD set featuring James McCarthy’s Codebreaker (an exploration of the life of the pioneering computer scientist and mathematician Alan Turing) and Will Todd’s Ode to a Nightingale (setting the famous poem by John Keats).
Gramophone – Malcolm Riley
“This important release should be in every keen choral singer’s Christmas stocking. This generous two-disc release from Signum presents two recent important additions to the genre, launched with their customary bright and rich tone by the Hertfordshire Chorus under their indefatigable conductor, David Temple.”
Classical Ear – Rob Cowan
Codebreaker is an exceptional achievement on numerous counts. What really hits home is its warmth, compassion and emotional ardour. Will Todd’s engaging Choral Symphony No. 4, setting Keats’s ‘Ode to a Nightingale’. A sizeable, texturally rich and beautifully orchestrated essay.
